Water-damaged ceilings can be a real eyesore. They usually are found whenever there is a leak in the roof or if a room is directly under a bathroom with some sort of plumbing issue.
Once you find the source of the leak and make sure it is fixed, the next step is to fix the water-damaged area.
If you have water damage that is not near a tape joint and it is only a brownish stain in the ceiling or wall, you can easily get rid of the stain by using an oil-based primer.

However, if there is damage to taped joints, then you will have to remove the damaged tape and replace it.
I prefer using mesh Tape with Easy Sand mix joint compound aka hot mud.
